2022 BMW X6 M Review

Overview
What would you get if you gave the BMW X5 bold styling and performance upgrades? You'd wind up with the X6 M, an SUV that stands out for its stunning design and sharp handling. The X6 M uses the same platform as the X5, but it differs from that model in crucial ways. First, it brings unique design cues to the table; it has a more coupe-like silhouette than the X5. That gives it a more stylish look, but the altered roofline means this SUV has less rear headroom and cargo space than its X5 brother. Secondly, the X6 M ramps up driving excitement by adding a bevy of performance upgrades, led by a more potent engine. The result is a luxury midsize SUV that turns heads and leaves rivals in the dust.
On the downside, the X6 M's sporty nature translates into a stiff ride quality; the Audi RS Q8 and Genesis GV80 provide smoother handling. But the X6 M is a top choice if your priorities are design and performance.
Thrilling acceleration. Sharp, agile handling. Bold design inside and out.
Ride may feel too harsh for some tastes. Limited rear visibility. Less cargo space than standard X6.
With its sleek design and awe-inspiring performance, the BMW X6 M is a triumph of style and substance. But rival models provide a more comfortable ride during everyday driving.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The BMW X6 M is a five-passenger luxury midsize SUV with one trim level: X6 M Standard. It comes with a range of appealing amenities, and it's available with numerous optional upgrades.
Standard
The X6 M Standard starts at $110,395. It comes with exterior features such as 21-inch alloy wheels, heated power-folding side mirrors, an M rear spoiler, roof rails, M quad tailpipes, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, daytime running lights, and a power liftgate. The list of interior features includes leather upholstery, carbon-fiber accents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated 18-way power-adjustable front seats, heated armrests, driver's seat memory settings, keyless ignition, proximity keyless entry, multi-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, and adjustable ambient lighting.
Satellite radio and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system come standard. So do Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a navigation system. All X6 M SUVs come with safety equipment, such as blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.
In its standard form, this generously equipped luxury SUV will likely be a satisfying match for most buyers. But if you require more features, you can upgrade with stand-alone options or bundled packages.
The Competition package ($9,300) includes desirable amenities. It adds 17 more horsepower than the standard powertrain, along with upgraded wheels and lights, an M Sport exhaust system, and unique M Sport seat belts. And the Executive package ($2,600) includes remote engine start, soft-close automatic doors, massaging ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated and cooled cup holders, and rear manual side-window shades.
Engine and Performance
The X6 M has two available engines. The standard engine is a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 rated at 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. You can get a more potent powertrain via the Competition package, which boosts engine output to 617 hp.
BMW's X6 M surpasses most rivals in engine potency. It has more horsepower than the Audi RS Q8 and Genesis GV80. And with the optional Competition package, it outmuscles the most athletic trim offered by the Mercedes-Benz GLE. But the Porsche Cayenne's top trim is more powerful than the X6 M.
All X6 M SUVs feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. And all-wheel drive is standard on all models.
The X6 M is easily a top choice if you're looking for driving excitement. Handling is flawlessly sharp, and this SUV takes off like a bullet from a standstill. The one shortcoming concerns ride quality. This BMW feels extremely stiff during daily driving. Choose the Mercedes or Genesis for handling that's more forgiving of bumps and ruts.
Fuel Economy
Interior
The BMW X6 M seats five passengers, and it provides a roomy front row. However, its coupe-like roofline gives it less rear-seat headroom than the BMW X5. The X6 M's exterior design also compromises rear visibility. Large roof pillars and a tiny rear windshield impede the view.
Additionally, rear legroom isn't exactly generous. The X6 M offers just 35.6 inches for second-row passengers to extend their lower limbs. That's nearly 2 inches less than the X5, which provides 37.4 inches. The Genesis GV80 offers even more at 38.7 inches.
Carbon-fiber accents add sporty flair to this SUV's interior. And heated armrests and M-badged door sills make the cabin look and feel special.
The X6 M has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place and 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. With 33.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 72.3 cubic feet behind the first, the X5 is roomier. So is the rival GV80, with 34.9 cubic feet behind its third row.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The X6 M's infotainment system features attractive graphics and has a contemporary look. You can govern its features via voice, touchscreen, gesture control, or a touchpad controller.
BMW equips the X6 M with modern audio and tech features. The list includes navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
A 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard in the X6 M. With the Genesis GV80, a 14.5-inch touchscreen is standard.
Safety
The 2022 BMW X6 M hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And it hasn't been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Note that these organizations typically don't test high-performance variants such as the X6 M.
All X6 M SUVs come with forward-collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. And on the options list, you'll find additional features such as lane-keeping assist.
BMW X6 M vs. the Competition
The Genesis GV80 provides better fuel economy and more cargo space than the X6 M. And rivals such as the GV80, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi RS Q8 offer smoother handling. However, the BMW X6 M is a standout for its style and performance. If those attributes matter most to you, this SUV will likely be a match.
