2019 BMW X6 Review

Overview
Sportier styling than traditional SUVs; High quality interior
Not as practical as X5; Compromised rear visibility
The BMW X6 is a luxury midsize crossover SUV that is engineered to provide a perfect blend between sedan-like ride quality and the utility of an SUV. BMW first introduced the unique X6 for the 2008 model year. The X6 is still in its first generation of production.
What's New for 2019
Trims and Pricing
The BMW X6 comes with four doors and seating for four people, with a middle seat in the rear available as an option. The X6 is made in two trim levels: xDrive35i and xDrive50i. The xDrive35i comes with quite a bit of standard equipment, such as a sunroof, power liftgate, 19-inch wheels, adaptive and automatic xenon headlights, auto-leveling and LED halo running lights, foglights, power folding and auto dimming side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, cruise control, keyless ignition, dual zone automatic climate control, heated and power adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, iDrive electronics interface, Bluetooth, BMW Assist communications service and a sound system with ten speakers, CD player, auxiliary input jack, HD radio and a USB/iPod interface. For xDrive50i models, the standard features list duplicates that of the xDrive35i and adds front seats that adjust in fourteen different directions, adjustable seat bolsters, voice controls and navigation with real-time traffic. An optional Premium package comes with manual rear side sunshades, keyless ignition and entry, four zone automatic climate control, rear and top view cameras and for the 35i navigation with voice controls and real-time traffic. The Luxury Seating package comes with multicontour seats with ventilation and massaging feature. The Cold Weather package adds heated rear seats, headlight washers and a heated steering wheel. The Technology package brings with it automatic high beams, head-up display and a side-view parking camera. A Dynamic Handling package comes with enhanced speed-sensitive steering and adaptive suspension. A Premium Sound package comes with a premium sound system that has sixteen speakers and can be upgraded with an additional 825 watts of power. The BMW Individual Composition package comes with multicontour seats, leather-trimmed dash and more color choices. For performance options, a Sport Activity package comes with sport seats, dark exterior trim pieces and 19-inch wheels. The M performance package comes with 20-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel and performance tires. Several stand-alone options are available, such as power soft-close doors, head-up display, LED headlights, lane departure warning, running boards, adaptive cruise control, sport seats, keyless ignition and entry, rear seat entertainment system, satellite radio and BMW Apps for smartphone integration. An X6 comes with a factory invoice of about $57,000 for an xDrive35i model and an MSRP of about $61,000. The xDrive50i trim level adds about $11,000 to the vehicle’s MSRP. Your status as a member means your Certified Dealer will offer you an upfront price that guarantees savings, all without putting you through the usual car shopping hassles.
Engine and Performance
The X5 xDrive35i is outfitted with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six cylinder engine with a peak output of 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy measures 16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined. The xDrive50i comes with a larger and more powerful engine, a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that produces up to 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy estimates measure 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. Both trim levels come with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
Interior
Those familiar with the BMW X5 will notice the front seat area of the X6 seems familiar. Since the X6 is based off the X5, BMW kept the same layout up front, adding additional padding to the center console and sport seats to accommodate more aggressive driving. Like on the X5, buyers have their choice of seat colors and interior trim materials to give the vehicle a more customized feel. All of the interior materials are of excellent quality and both fit and finish are as good as it gets. The overall cabin design is classic and simple, meaning the driver does not have to fumble with a few dozen controls. This is thanks to the iDrive system, which comes with a compact controller and the ability to customize the system’s functions. The X6’s interior diverges greatly from the X5 once you get past the front seats. The backseat area comes with two luxurious bucket seats and a large center console, although the center console can be deleted and a third seat added. Rear headroom is a problem for very tall passengers, although legroom is excellent. The sloping rear roofline means the X6’s cargo space totals a decent 25 cubic feet with the rear seats up. Folding the seats down expands the cargo area to only 60 cubic feet.
