2020 Ford Mustang Review

Overview
Comfortable enough for commuting; Available V8 engine sounds excellent; Offers safety aids like forward-collision warning; Few cars still offer a manual transmission
The back seat is very snug; Rivals offer more polished infotainment systems; Dim interior lighting
The iconic Ford Mustang traces its roots back over fifty years of production. Upon its release, the Mustang brought style and power to the masses, continuing that mantra to this day. The sixth-generation 'Stang keeps its classic front-engine rear-wheel-drive setup, while the interior offers refinement unimaginable in sports cars of the past. For extreme speed, check out the Shelby trims. As a daily driver or track car, the Mustang fits the bill.
What's New for 2020
Trims and Pricing
The Mustang comes in eight trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, Bullitt, Shelby GT350, GT350R, and GT500. They are all fastback coupes; the EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, and GT Premium are all available as convertibles as well.
Standard features for the EcoBoost are xenon headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, limited-slip rear differential, LED taillights, blind-spot mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power locks, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, rearview camera, Sync voice controls, 4.2-inch infotainment screen, a sound system with six speakers, two USB ports, CD player, an auxiliary input jack. The EcoBoost starts at about $27,000, with the convertible starting around $32,500.
EcoBoost Premium models begin around $32,000 and come with standard equipment like 18-inch wheels, chrome interior accents, drive modes, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a sound system with nine speakers, satellite radio, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The roadster costs about $37,500.
GT models retail at about $36,000 and have the same equipment that is standard on the EcoBoost, plus a larger engine, 18-inch wheels, line-lock, chrome exhaust tips, upgraded brakes, launch control, and hood vents.
The GT Premium includes all of the features of the EcoBoost Premium and GT models. It has a starting MSRP of roughly $40,000 for the fastback and $45,500 for the convertible.
The Bullitt model gets exclusive trim accents, 18-inch wheels, summer tires, and a more powerful engine. It starts around $47,000.
The Shelby GT350 and track-ready GT350R feature special alloy and carbon fiber wheels, respectively, unique paint options, black side mirrors, racing seats, and significantly restyled interiors. They use a powerful 5.2-liter V8 of their own. These models come in at about $59,500.
For the ultimate in speed and prestige, drivers should consider the Shelby GT500. It has a powerful supercharged V8 engine and many performance upgrades, all for around $70,500.
Engine and Performance
EcoBoost models come with a turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder that pushes out 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. GT models come with a beefy 5.0-liter V8 that thunders out 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates the EcoBoost Coupe should return 25 mpg combined. The GT should get about 18 mpg combined.
The Bullitt comes with the same 5.0-liter V8, but it produces 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The Shelby GT350 and GT350R employ a sizable 5.2-liter V8 that churns out 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. It should return about 16 mpg combined.
The top-of-the-line Shelby GT500 also has a 5.2-liter V8, but this one is supercharged. It generates 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque.
All models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. An automatic transmission is available on the EcoBoost and GT trims, and standard on the Shelby GT500.
Interior
Ford offers a wide array of seat color options for the Mustang, which vary according to trim level and options packages. Some are solid colors, while others feature striping or a two-tone layout that livens up the interior quite a bit. The dash, center console, and door panels are mostly black, except for the trim materials mentioned above.
Overall, the look of the interior features some throwback designs that are married seamlessly to modern elements, making for an overall attractive layout. The steering wheel is soft to grip and features some excellent contouring for increased comfort. The gauges and controls are easy to read and understand. The materials Ford has used are better overall than on the previous generation of the Mustang, while overall build quality has also improved.
The interior feels bigger than in the previous generation of the Mustang, thanks to a smaller center console and dashboard. As has been the case in the past, the front seats have plenty of space even for taller adults, while the rear seats are cramped for anyone but kids. For the coupe, there are 13.5 cubic feet of space in the trunk, which is pretty good. The convertible has 11.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is also respectable.
